FAQ

Common questions

Everything you need to know before booking your first lesson.

Is German hard to learn for English speakers?
+

German has a reputation for difficulty, but Berlitz’s immersive method makes grammar intuitive through use rather than memorisation. Sentence structure, cases, and gender become natural patterns rather than rules to remember. Most students are surprised how quickly they progress from session one.

What German course formats do you offer?
+

We offer evening group classes (Tue & Thu, 17:30–19:30, 10-week courses), one-to-one private sessions (in-person or online), and intensive immersion courses. Private lessons are ideal if you have a specific exam date or relocation deadline.

How long to reach B1 level?
+

With two evening sessions per week (4h/week), most students reach A2 in 10 weeks and B1 in approximately 20–25 weeks. Private lessons can halve this timeline. Your instructor will set a personalised roadmap from your first session.

Do you prepare students for Goethe-Institut and TELC exams?
+

Yes. We offer specific preparation tracks for Goethe-Zertifikat A2, B1 and B2, TELC Deutsch, and TestDaF. Your instructor is trained on the exact exam format, marking criteria, and the most common areas where candidates lose marks. Many students use Berlitz as preparation before sitting their official exam.

Why is German useful for people based in London?
+

Richmond, Chiswick, and South West London have significant German-speaking communities. Germany, Austria, and Switzerland are among the UK’s most important trading partners. Thousands of Londoners relocate to DACH countries each year for work — B1 German is often a visa or employment requirement. Our TCR location is easily accessible from Richmond, Wimbledon, and all of West and South London.

Can I get a Berlitz certificate?
+

Yes. On completion you receive an official Berlitz certificate recognised by employers globally. This is separate from and complementary to externally accredited qualifications. If you need a Goethe, TELC, or TestDaF certificate, we prepare you for those external exams as well.

Where is the German class held?
+

Classes take place at our Tottenham Court Road centre, Zone 1, directly accessible from Tottenham Court Road Tube (Central and Northern lines). If commuting isn’t convenient, we also offer identical online evening classes so you can attend from home or office.
